- A courtier with King Benhadad at Damascus, who became king of Syria (Aram). When Elisha the prophet paid a visit to Damascus, King Benhadad sent Hazael to ask if he would recover from his illness. Elisha answered ambiguously (2 Kgs. 8:10–13), giving Hazael to understand that the king would die and that Hazael would succeed him. He defeated Israel and Judah in battle (2 Kgs. 13:3) but was himself defeated by the Assyrians in 841 and 837 BCE under Shalmaneser Ⅲ, and again by Adadnirari Ⅲ about 805 BCE, according to Assyrian inscriptions.
